COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's lacrosse team and head coach John Tillman welcomed back the 2014 seniors that helped the Terps reach the NCAA Final Four, on Saturday, October 25, for the annual awards banquet at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center on the campus of the University of Maryland.
The highlight of the afternoon's awards was the presentation of the Edwin Powell Team MVP Award, which was given to midfielder Mike Chanenchuk and long stick midfielder Michael Ehrhardt.
Chanenchuk, who led the team in points, goals and assists, was a first team All-American and provided one of the truly memorable moments in recent Maryland men's lacrosse history with his game-winning goal as time expired in the first round of the NCAA tournament vs. Cornell.
Ehrhardt, who made the switch from close defense to long pole, earned first team All-America honors after finishing the season with 69 groundballs and 28 caused turnovers.
The "Big Man" Award, given in honor of former coach Dick Edell. The award was created to honor the player that best exemplified the selfless and positive qualities of the retired coach. The 2014 award was given to sophomore defender Matt Dunn, who is just the second sophomore to win the award, joining Paull Gillette, who is a two-time winner having won the inaugural award as a sophomore in 2002 and again as a senior in 2004.
The Daniel Slafkosky Coach's Award was also given out, in memory of former assistant coach Dave Slafkosky's son, who passed away prior to the 2001 season. Goalie Thomas Guarino was selected as the member of the Terps who best illustrated Dan's positive attitude on and off the field.
