Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement
“It was a really nice game. To be able to come out and get some jitters out of the way, obviously play a lot of combinations, especially for our freshman to be able to get that experience. I saw a lot of really good things and some things that we can work on to be able to improve. Defensively, I thought we picked it up the second half and were able to run in our transition and I like how we shared the basketball.”
On redshirt freshman forward A'Lexus Harrison:
“She's been huge, exactly what you need, that spark. She just plays relentlessly, plays so hard, and competes on every possession. You have to be able to have that and I thought that she was a huge spark and quite honestly that's how she has been practicing. So it was nice to be able to see her take that from practice into the game.”
On how the other freshmen played tonight:
“I thought early they all played with some jitters but once they were able to settle down I thought they did a nice job. Really pleased to be able to see how Kristen [Confroy] came in the second half and really started, we put her at some backup point where she hasn't played a lot of and was flawless, handled the ball, made great decisions, knocked down threes. Kiara [Leslie] was really active rebounding the basketball and Aja [Ellison] did a tremendous job running the floor, blocking shots, and rebounding for us.”
On their rebounding success against a smaller Goldey-Beacom team:
“It's a little fool's gold. At least it's a nice stat to be able to see because if you didn't see that it would be worrisome. I think until we play matched competition when you'll have a true indication. I like that; I thought we were actively going after the glass which is where it starts.”
On what she saw from the press:
“We're fast. It's going to be able to help us. The more time we spend on it in terms of being able to add more possessions. You see our athleticism, 18 steals tonight. It's something we want to be able to use a lot more.”
On the team taking a lot of three point attempts:
“I thought they did a really nice job just being unselfish with the ball. I'm surprised, they didn't play any zone, so I thought we were taking what they gave us.”
Junior Forward Malina Howard
On playing against her sister:
“I mean I treated her just like any other player. I think that was the easiest thing for me to do. I'm very close with her, but it was just like playing against anybody else.”
On if she had any conversations with her sister before the game:
“I gave her a big hug and said good luck on her first game, because this was her first college game. But other than that, just good luck and hello.”
Freshman Guard Kristen Confroy
On how she felt playing in her first college basketball game:
“We had two scrimmages against the scout guys in the arena so I figured those would be kind of the games to get the jitters out and I was completely wrong because it's so different with the uniforms and the fans, so it took a little bit to settle down, but I was happy to figure things out and get comfortable.”
Sophomore Guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough
On why she was such an effective scorer today:
“I think it's just having a feel for the game. I just wanted to let the game come to me and luckily I have great teammates who can pick me up too.”
On how the team thought about Malina (Howard) playing against her sister:
“Yeah, I mean I know how close she is with her sister. But she actually did treat it like any other game. I actually forgot that her sister was on the other team until you brought it up.”
On the play of A'Lexus Harrison:
“We know how hard she has been working in practice. So she deserved everything that she is getting because we know how hard she has been working.”
On the team's rebounding:
“That's a part of our identity, that's a part of Maryland basketball, you know rebound and run. We know how going into the Big Ten, how rebounding is going to effect most of the game because of how big some of the teams are.”
