LOS ANGELES – Sophomore Lexie Brown was named to the Wooden Award's Preseason Top 30 List Monday and is one of just six underclassmen to make the list.
The list is comprised of 30 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for college basketball's most prestigious honor. The list is chosen by a preseason poll of national women's college basketball media members.
Brown is averaging 12.5 points per game for the Terrapins and is among the Big Ten leaders in steals with 3.0 per contest. In her rookie season, Brown averaged 10.1 points per game and 4.2 assists. She shot 43 percent from the field in 30 starts on the year. She was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List last season as a freshman and the All-ACC Freshmen Team. Her performance in the Terps' run to the NCAA Final Four earned her a spot on the All-Regional Team in Louisville.
Five players from the Big Ten made the list, including Minnesota's Rachel Banham, Iowa's Samantha Logic, Michigan State's Aerial Powers, Nebraska's Rachel Theriot and Brown.
Players not chosen to the preseason list are eligible for both the midseason list and the National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 20 top players who have proven to their universities that they are making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA. The Wooden Award All American team, consisting of the nation's top five players, will be announced the week of the Final Four.
Maryland is ranked No. 8 in the USA Today Division I Coaches poll and No. 10 in the latest Associated Press poll.
After Monday's game vs. Loyola in College Park, the Terrapins will head to Puerto Rico to play in the San Juan Shootout at the Mario Morales Coliseum in Guaynabo, P.R. The Terps will take on No. 23 James Madison (3-0) Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET and Washington State (3-1) at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
Live stats will not be available for the Terps' two games in Puerto Rico, but live updates will be available on the team's Twitter page at http://www.twitter.com/umdwbb.
