Terrapins Edged By Cougars in San Juan Shootout

Box Score

SAN JUAN, P.R. –  The eighth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was edged out by Washington State, 70-64, Saturday as the Terps' late rally fell short in the final minutes in the match in the San Juan Shootout.

Sophomore Brionna Jones led the Terrapins (6-1) with a career-high 23 points. Laurin Mincy added 13 points, including 11 in the second half, with a team-high five assists.

Lia Galdiera scored 33 points to tie her career-high for the Cougars (5-2).

“Washington State played a flawless game,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “I thought they competed hard for 40 minutes. They did a tremendous job defensively and were really, really aggressive on us. They made it hard for us to get into any kind of rhythm offensively.”

Washington State scored the opening bucket 20 seconds in, then the Terps' defense held the Cougars without a field goal for well over seven minutes. In the meantime, the Terrapins went on a 12-2 run to take the lead 12-4.

With 11 minutes left in the first, the Cougars went on an 8-0 run as the Terps went without a field goal for just under seven minutes. Washington State led 31-27 at the break.

Leading 33-31 early in the second half, the Cougars went on a 10-2 run to take command. Galdeira had six points during the burst that made it 43-33 with 14:52 left.

Mincy's layup with 2:27 left brought the Terrapins to 59-55, but the Cougars hit seven of their next eight free throws.

Mincy currently had 979 career points and needs just 21 to become the 19th Terrapin in history to hit 1,000 career points.

Next, the Terrapins will head to Fort Wayne, Ind. to take on No. 1 Notre Dame Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and the matchup will be shown online through ESPN3.
