Stinnett Receives National Honors

COLLEGE PARK, Md. A day after being selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, senior Jake Stinnett was named one of the NCAA's Top Performers for Week 2 on Monday and was named College Sports Madness National Pitcher of the Week.

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Bryant, Stinnett tossed eight innings of one-hit ball and struck out a career-high 11 batters to earn his first win of the season. He retired the first 17 batters he faced and took a perfect game into the sixth inning and a no-hitter into the seventh. In all, Stinnett faced 26 batters – two over the minimum – in his eight-inning stint.

The native of Vista, Calif., is one of only three Maryland pitchers in the last five seasons to total 11 or more strikeouts in a game. Jimmy Reed had 11 Ks against Boston College on May 16, 2013, Sander Beck struck out 11 against Army on Feb. 25, 2011, and Brett Harman fanned 12 against Boston College on April 11, 2010.

After facing off against James Madison in Harrisonburg Tuesday afternoon, Maryland returns home for a four-game series against Massachusetts to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday.
