COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Three student-athletes with NCAA experience from this season are among the seven University of Maryland track and field athletes who have qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, to be held next weekend in Jacksonville, Fla.
Amber Melville, Amina Smith and Thea LaFond, who each participated in the NCAA Indoor Nationals last March, have qualified in the women's high jump. LaFond is also among the national leaders in the triple jump.
They will be joined in Jacksonville by Myah Hicks, who qualified in the women's 800, Cici Onyekwere, who will participate in the women's shot put, and Lisa Meneau, who will be in the women's 400 hurdles.
Senior Josh Haghighi will represent the Maryland men in the shot put.
“Seven qualifiers across five events heading into postseason demonstrates the diversity of this team,” said Terrapin head coach Andrew Valmon. “We are excited to see this group extend their season. Postseason is always one of our main goals for any season.”
The top 48 athletes in the Eastern half of the U.S. qualify for the East Preliminaries on May 29 to 31. The top 12 finishers in each event move on to the NCAA Outdoor Nationals, to be held June 11 to 14 in Eugene, Ore.
The same qualifying procedures are in place for the West Preliminary rounds, which will be held at the University of Arkansas.
