COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After spending the past 11 years in various conference offices, Kristen Brown joins the Terrapins as associate athletic director, sport administration, director of athletics Kevin Anderson announced Tuesday.
“We are excited to welcome Kristen to the University of Maryland,” said Anderson. “Kristen has a strong background in intercollegiate athletics in a myriad of different leadership roles. Her experience at various conference offices, including her time with the Big Ten, will help guide us as we begin a new chapter in Maryland athletics.”
Brown last served as the American Athletic Conference's director of basketball administration in the league's inaugural year, where she organized the league's basketball championship and served as a liaison to institutional administrators, facility directors and ticket managers.
Prior to working with The American, Brown was the director of sports administration for the Big East Conference from 2010-13. With the Big East, she served as the conference office sport administrator for field hockey, volleyball, swimming & diving, tennis, women's lacrosse and softball as well as the secondary administrator for men's soccer and baseball. Brown coordinated championship operations, created regular-season schedules and worked with the conference's senior women administrators.
“I am very appreciative to Kevin Anderson, Kelly Mehrtens and the search committee for this outstanding opportunity,” said Brown. “The University of Maryland athletics program has an outstanding reputation for both its academic and athletic success. It is a very exciting time to join and contribute to Maryland athletics in its inaugural season in the Big Ten.”
A native of Rockford, Ill., Brown began her career in collegiate athletics with the Big Ten Conference in 2003 as an intern with the championships department. She moved up in the conference office and became the assistant director of championships and women's basketball operations in 2005. Brown became the associate director of championships in 2008. While with the Big Ten, she served as assistant tournament director for the conference's women's basketball tournaments, helped create the Big Ten/ACC women's basketball challenge and developed the conference's “Get to Know Her” campaign.
Brown was a two-time letter winner on the women's basketball team at Northern Illinois and graduated with a bachelor's degree in education with an emphasis in sports management in 2003. She also earned a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University earlier this year.
