Maryland Set to Host Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland track and field team will host its lone home event of the indoor season this Saturday with the Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md. Competition is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.

The Maryland contingent at Saturday's meet will consist of reigning Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week Thea LaFond, who had a standout season debut last weekend at the Penn State Relays. The senior won the high jump (5'11.25”) and triple jump (42'5.25”), ranking in the top-five in the nation in both events.

Amber Melville is also slated to compete Saturday.  The senior is coming off a second place finish in the high jump at the Penn State Relays and will look to continue to build for the remainder of the season.

Senior Myah Hicks, who won the mile run at the Penn State Relays, will also be in action in Landover. She will join fellow distance standouts Emily VandeWater, Maeve McCoy, Catherine Sheffo and Alexandra Cimino in anchoring those events on the women's side for the Terps.

In the throws, Chioma Onyekwere will look to build on her strong showing at the Penn State Relays. The junior won the shot put (47'8”) and took third in the weight throw. Freshman Claudia Ababio made her Maryland debut finishing second in the shot put and sixth in the weight throw.

The 60m hurdles was also a strong event for the Terps in Happy Valley with Noella Anyangwe, Lisa Meneau and Peyton Wade all competing in the final. All three are set to contend Saturday.

Freshman Kayla Richadson placed second the long jump in her Maryland debut and will look to go one spot higher this weekend on home turf.

On the men's side, freshman Diego Lyon is set to make his debut after a decorated junior career in his native Chile.  The Terrapins will also have loads of experience with seniors Kikanae Punyua, Terrence Maliff, Trey Sherman and Lionel Wilson all set to compete.
