Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The eighth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (15-2, 6-0 B1G) won its ninth straight game Sunday with a 74-54 victory over Illinois at XFINITY Center. The Terrapins have won six straight conference games to open their first season in the Big Ten.
Sophomore Brionna Jones had a career-high 24 points with 14 rebounds and a career-best six blocks to lead the way. She picked up her fifth double-double of the season and fourth in conference competition. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Lexie Brown each scored 13 for the Terrapins, the lone unbeaten team in Big Ten play. Brown added a career-high seven steals and eight assists. Brene Moseley added 10 points, all in the second half.
"I think you always have to be ready to play with these conference games and with the battles you're going to face every single night,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “I thought Illinois did a nice job coming in for 40 minutes and competed extremely hard. We had to find different ways. I thought there was unselfishness, and Lexie leading the way in the first half really got us going inside with Bri. Bri had a monster game obviously when you talk about offensively and getting to the glass. The energy with Brene in the second half, and Shatori's defense really helped. Being able to find different ways and our depth was really able to wear them out in the second half. I thought our defense improved, we really cranked up our defense and I think that was the difference in the game."
Freshman Amarah Coleman scored a season-high 24 for Illinois (11-7, 2-4), which dropped its third straight. The Illini committed 27 turnovers and the Terrapins scored 27 points off them.
Down 36-26 at halftime, Illinois came out of the break hot to close the gap to 42-39 at 13:48.
Following a timeout by Frese, Jones made a layup, Kristen Confroy nailed a jumper and Moseley hit a 3-pointer to boost the margin back to 10 points with 12:15 remaining.
After Coleman answered with a jumper, Moseley hit another shot from beyond the arc and Jones added a layup and two free throws to make it 56-41 with 9:34 left.
Jones went 9 of 16 from the floor and was 6 for 9 at the foul line. The 6-foot-3 sophomore's previous career high was 23, against Ohio State last month.
Maryland forced 15 first-half turnovers and got 11 points apiece from Jones and Walker-Kimbrough in taking a double-digit lead at the break.
Illinois led 5-0 before Walker-Kimbrough made the final four baskets in a 12-point run that put the Terrapins ahead for good.
