COLLEGE PARK, Md. – While the Maryland men's lacrosse team is busy preparing for their first game of the season on Feb. 14 against Navy, it found time off the field Saturday to give back to the community.
The entire Terrapin team traveled to nearby Washington, D.C., to partner with the Food & Friends organization, which prepares and delivers specialized meals and groceries for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
“Delivering food to terminally ill patients was a great way for our entire team to get involved in the community,” said senior defenseman Eric Parnon. “It can be hard to see past school and athletics, but working with Food & Friends gave our team a wonderful opportunity to do so.”
Maryland's student-athletes arrived at Food & Friends in nine cars, before taking an orientation class and viewing the kitchen. The players then split into their cars, each delivering food to 4-to-6 locations and staying to chat with recipients along the way.
“The University of Maryland's men's lacrosse team was a huge help to Food & Friends this past Saturday," said Stephanie Armstrong, Food & Friends delivery volunteer coodinator. "Their team of 40 volunteers and nine cars were able to visit 62 of our clients living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses in Washington, DC and delivered over 550 meals. Their help is what keeps our organization running!”
The Terrapins, which have advanced to the Final Four three of the last four years, continue preseason practice this week. Ticket packages for Maryland's inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference are available here.
