Terps Hit New York for Armory Invitational Meet

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Seniors Amber Melville and Thea LaFond will lead the Maryland track and field team into the Armory Invitational Meet this weekend in New York.
Both competitors have earned Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honors: LaFond on Jan. 12 and Melville on Jan. 19. Melville is tied with Cincinnati's Erika Hurd and Nebraska's Marusa Cernjul for the top mark in the country in the high jump (6'1.25”). LaFond sits at t-13 with a jump of 5'11.25”.
LaFond is also among the best triple jumpers in the country, her mark of 42' 5.25” placing her t-7 in the nation.
Chioma Onyekwere, the Terps' best thrower so far this season, will be in New York for competiton. The junior placed second in the shot put and weight throw at the Tiger Open after winning the shot put at the Terrapin Invitational. Freshman Claudia Ababio took the weight throw title at the home event and finished third in the shot put.
Maryland's women's team is currently ranked No. 16 in the U.S. Track and Field Computer Ratings.
On the men's side, Dan Trettel has been strong so far for the Terrapins, winning events at the Tiger Open and Terrapin Invitational. Freshman Diego Lyon returns to the track after a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles.
Senior Terrence Maliff, who won the 600m at the Terrapin Invitational, is also expected to compete for Maryland.
