UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Senior goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands notched a career-high 11 saves, but the Maryland women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to No. 11 Penn State at Jeffrey Field Thursday night.
The Terrapins (5-8-0) mounted a valiant defensive performance, repelling a high powered Nittany Lion attack for most of the contest. Maryland found some offensive success in the second half, but were unable to overcome a well-organized Penn State back line.
“I'm really proud of the fight our kids put forth tonight,” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “We put together a game plan and the girls did a great job of executing the plan. Unfortunately it wasn't enough. We'll go home, get come rest, and begin preparing for Ohio State.”
Maryland repelled Penn State attacks for most of the first half. The back line of seniors Amanda Gerlitz, Kayla Shea, Shannon Collins and Sarah Fichtner absorbed Penn State possession and made it difficult for the home team to find clean opportunities in front of goal.
The Terrapin offense attempted to play direct with balls over the top, but the Nittany Lion defense was up to the task.
Beanlands was sensational throughout the match, commanding the box and making a number of nice saves. Her previous career high of 10 saves came against No. 1 UCLA last season.
Senior Riley Barger missed the goal on a shot in the second half, while the Terps were able to draw a couple set pieces that threatened the Penn State penalty area.
The Nittany Lions took the lead for good when Megan Schafer scored off a rebound inside the box in the 77th minute. Maryland was able to make some headway forward late, but could not find an equalizer.
Senior Maisie McCune made her first start of the season in midfield for the Terps.
Maryland returns to action at Ohio State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
