COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland Athletics Department celebrated graduation day with several senior student-athletes and their family and frields as part of Saturday's December Commencement. A reception was held prior to the main ceremony as Maryland student-athletes prepared for a memorable day.
"We are very proud of our student-athletes for their tireless work ethic and commitment to earning a degree from the University of Maryland," said director of athletics Kevin Anderson. "We congratulate each of our student-athletes and their families as we celebrate this incredible milestone."
A total of 29 student-athletes earned their degrees Saturday.
“We'd like to congratulate the graduates and their families on this important day," said Chris Uchacz, associate director of athletics and director of the Academic Services & Career Development Unit. "We're grateful to have outstanding student-athletes who work hard not only on the field of competition, but in the classroom as well."
"It means a lot to earn my degree from the University of Maryland," said Sarah Sprink, an All-American on the field hockey team. "Athletics gave me the opportunity to come to the United States and earn a degree that I can use around the world. It's very special that you can earn your degree and play the sport you love while having another level of support through the athletics department."
The graduating class includes 10 members of their respective sport's all-conference academic teams.
"This is the flagship university in the state I'm from, so it means a lot to graduate from Maryland," said baseball's Kevin Mooney. "It was a privilege to play baseball here and finish my degree as a Terp. I have to thank the athletics department and the academic staff for helping me get to this point."
