Terps Visit Rutgers In First Quad Meet Of Season

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The Maryland gymnastics team takes the short trip to Rutgers on Saturday for a 1 p.m. Valentine's Day matinee against the Scarlet Knights, Cornell Big Red, and Ursinus Bears. Saturday's meet marks the first of five consecutive quad meets for the Terrapins (1-5, 1-3 B1G).

The past four meets, vs. Minnesota (194.325), at Penn State (194.450), at Iowa (195.275) and vs. Michigan (194.575), the team has totaled a team score above 194.000, surpassing the 195.000 plateau for the first time this season against Iowa. Maryland tallied a season-high team total of 195.275 at Iowa (1/30) and recorded their highest home score of the season, a 194.575, against #5 Michigan (2/7) last weekend.

Saturday marks the first meeting between the Terps and Scarlet Knights as members of the Big Ten Conference. Both Maryland and Rutgers joined the conference on July 1, 2014. The meet will also be Rutgers annual Pink Meet to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness.

Last time out

  • The Terps fell to #5 Michigan at the XFINITY Center 194.575-197.125.
  • In front of a record crowd, Maryland recorded their highest home team total and second-highest team total (194.575) of the season.
  • Maryland tied their team score on bars (48.850) and register their highest floor score (48.825) in two meets.
  • Ebony Walters scored the highest individual score (9.850) of the meet for the Terps on floor.

Scouting the Scarlet Knights

  • Last time out, Rutgers fell to fellow Big Ten foe, #22 Ohio State, 193.800-194.875. The Scarlet Knights are 5-6 on the season and 0-5 in the Big Ten.
  • Five gymnasts went 9.700 or above as Rutgers posted an event score of 48.850 on floor last meet.
  • Saturday's meeting marks the 45th all-time meeting between the two programs. Maryland currently holds a 38-6 all-time record against Rutgers.
  • Rutgers and Maryland faceoff again in two weeks (Feb. 22) in a quad-meet at West Virginia. New Hampshire will round out the meet.

Scouting the Big Red

  • Last time out, Cornell took the Big Red Invitational title over Brockport State, Southern Conn., and Ithaca. The Big Red tallied a team-total of 190.625.
  • With the win, Cornell moves to 6-8 on the season.
  • Saturday's meet marks the eight all-time meeting between the Big Red and Maryland. The Terps currently hold a 7-0 record against Cornell.
  • Maryland last faced off against Cornell on Jan. 19, 2013 in a 195.975-191.800 Maryland victory.

Scouting the Bears

  • Last time out, the Bears tallied a score of 190.325 in route to a third place finish against Bridgeport, West Chester and Rhode Island College.
  • Junior Tina Steffenhagen was named NCGA East Region Specialist of the Week for the second time this season.
  • Saturday's meet marks the third all-time meeting between Maryland and Ursinus. The Terps hold a 2-0 all-time record.
  • Maryland lasted faced Ursinus in 2002, when Maryland defeated the Bears 192.500-183.225.

Terps Set Attendance Record

  • Maryland gymnastics set a new attendance record of 2,207 fans in the Feb. 7 meet against #5 Michigan. The meet represented the annual PRIDE meet.
  • Prior to the meet against Michigan, the GymTerps had previously set a new attendance record of 2,091 in the inaugural 'Beauty and the Beast' event on Jan. 9.

Nationally Ranked on Vault and Floor

  • The GymTerps also currently ranks 20th nationally and fourth in the Big Ten on vault. The team recorded a season-high team score of 49.150 vs. Iowa (1/30).
  • Maryland currently ranks 25th in the nation on floor. The team tallied a season-high team score of 49.100 vs. GW and WVU (1/8). The Terps have broken the 49.000 mark two out of five meets this season.

Beam Me up, stephy

  • Senior Stephanie Giameo currently ranks 21st nationally and tied for fifth in the Big Ten on beam. Giameo added a 9.850 on beam in the anchor position against Iowa (1/30).

Looking Ahead

  • The Terps return home on Feb. 20 for a quad meet against George Washington, Towson and William and Mary.
  • The meet marks the annual Pink Meet to benefit Breast Cancer awareness and research.
