MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—The Maryland gymnastics team posted a team total of 195.350 en route to a quad-meet victory against West Virginia, Rutgers and #25 New Hampshire, Sunday afternoon. Senior Karen Tang recorded a 9.925 on bars, tying a school-record on the apparatus and winning the individual title on the event. With the victory, the Terps move to 9-5-1 on the season and 3-3 in the Big Ten.
“I just love to have fun with it,” senior Karen Tang said on her record-tying bars performance. “The team was out there cheering and encouraging everyone and that really gave me the extra push and inspiration on my routine.”
West Virginia came in just behind the Terps, tallying a 195.200. Rutgers and New Hampshire both scored a 194.825 and 194.100 respectively.
“This gives us a lot of confidence moving forward,” head coach Brett Nelligan said after the meet. “We keep growing and were able to come into a tough environment on short rest and get three really hard-fought wins.”
Maryland started the meet on beam, racking up a team score of 48.750. Dominiquea Trotter (9.800) set a personal best on the event, while Stephanie Giameo (9.800), Shannon Skochko (9.750) and Sarah Faller (9.725) all contributed high scores. Giameo and Trotter both tied for third individually on the event.
On floor, the Terps bounced back from Friday, recording a team score of 48.775. Leah Slobodin and Karen Tang added a pair of 9.800 scores. Ebony Walters added a 9.775.
The Terps moved to vault in the third rotation, scoring a 48.875. Abbie Epperson and Shannon Skochko added a pair of 9.800 scores. Kathy Tang (9.775), Leah Slobodin (9.750), and Katy Dodds (9.750) all added top scores, as the team did not count a score lower than 9.750.
In the final rotation the Terrapins tallied a season-high team total of 48.950. On top of the program-high tying score, Abbie Epperson (9.800), Evelyn Nee (9.775), and Kathy Tang (9.750) contributed top scores.
Next week, the GymTerps head to Denton, Tx. to face Brown, Utah State, and Texas Women's University at 1 p.m. ET.
