#5 Terrapins Push Past Penn State, 77-62

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.  – Led by Lexie Brown's career-high 10 assists, the Maryland women's basketball team defeated Penn State, 77-62, Thursday evening at the Bryce Jordan Center. At 11-0 in Big Ten play, the Terps are off to their best start in conference play in school history.

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough paced the Terrapins' offense with 21 points on 10-for-14 shooting, while Laurin Mincy added 11. Maryland (20-2, 11-0) shot 50.8 percent from the field in the game as 10 different Terps tallied points against Penn State (5-18, 2-10). 

Three different Lady Lions scored in double digits, but the Terrapins held the Lady Lions to just 12.5 percent from 3-point range.

The teams started the game evenly matched, and Penn State took a 13-10 lead into the under-12 timeout. The Lions increased their lead to 17-10 while holding the Terrapins to 4-for-14 shooting. Walker-Kimbrough helped spark Maryland, tallying 25 points as the Terps used a 31-7 run over the last 10 minutes of the half to build a 41-24 lead.

Maryland reached the 20-win mark for the 11th straight season under head coach Brenda Frese.

The Terps are 55-29 (.655) all-time against their 2014-15 Big Ten opponents. Maryland has won 20 straight games against Big Ten teams, dating back to 2007. In the 13 years under Frese, the Terps are 23-4 (.852) against their new conference opponents. Frese is 35-10 (.778) all-time vs. Big Ten opponents, which includes her time at Minnesota (2001-02) and at Ball State (1999-01).

Next, the Terrapins will return home to host No. 19 Nebraska (17-5, 7-4) Sunday at 4 p.m. at XFINITY Center for the fifth annual Team Tyler game and the Alumni Game.

The Maryland-based organization, There Goes My Hero, will be on-hand to swab any fans that want to join the National Marrow Donor Program. Maryland will welcome children from Camp Sunrise, a week-long summer camp for patients who have been diagnosed or who have dealt with cancer, as well as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and The Zachary Hebda Foundation as part of the Team Tyler events.

The Terrapins will honor former head coach Chris Weller with a banner unveiling at halftime of Sunday's game. In her 27 seasons with the Terps, Weller guided Maryland to three Final Fours, eight Elite Eights, 10 Sweet Sixteen appearances and eight ACC Championships to include a win in the first ever women's basketball ACC Tournament Championship in 1978.
