ROSEMONT, Ill. – Freshman defensive midfielder Matt Neufeldt has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after a breakout week in which he helped lead the Maryland men's lacrosse team to a pair of victories over No. 11 Penn and Drexel.
The Naperville, Ill., product had an excellent week defensively for the 9th-ranked Terps, picking up eight ground balls and causing five turnovers.
Neufeldt was tremendous against the then-No. 11 Quakers, racking up three ground balls and causing four turnovers. Neufeldt's effort then carried into the Drexel game, in which he tallied a career-high five ground balls and helped hold the Dragons scoreless for a stretch of 56:17 in a 12-3 victory.
Neufeldt is part of a defensive unit that currently ranks first in the nation in scoring defense (5.25).
The award is the second Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor for the Terps and first for Neufeldt.
Maryland closes a three-game homestand this weekend as it welcomes 10th-ranked Princeton for a premier matchup at noon Saturday at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
