COLLEGE PARK, Md. - This summer when the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge swept the nation, Baltimore native Will Hauver, captain of the Rollins College lacrosse team and type 1 diabetic, decided to partake in a spinoff.
Instead of using the traditional bucket of ice, Hauver cracked an egg on his head, paving the way for the “Crack an Egg on Your Head Challenge.”
On Feb. 2, 2015, Hauver passed away from complications with the flu. Friends, family and the lacrosse community have since participated in the new challenge to raise awareness and donations for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
“I knew Will most of my life - he was a really close family friend,” said fellow Baltimore native and senior attackman Jay Carlson. “I think all it took was one person to share his video from when he did that a couple months ago. Then more people started doing it, tagging other people, and it just spread like wildfire.”
Spearheaded by Carlson, a group of players from the Maryland men's lacrosse team became the latest to crack eggs on their head in support of JDRF.
The Terps nominated their team managers, equipment manager Tim Ahner and SportsCenter anchor and Maryland alum Scott Van Pelt.
“A lot of my close friends have been doing it,” Carlson said. “Other lacrosse teams have been doing it and nominated us so we decided to do it. It was cool. Everyone was on board to do the egg crack challenge.”
