ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior defender Casey Ikeda has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Maryland defense hold No. 10 Princeton to just four goals in an 11-4 victory last Saturday.
The senior captain picked up one ground ball and caused a turnover against the Tigers, in addition to recording his first assist of the season. Ikeda and the Terrapin defense were instrumental in holding Princeton's Kip Orban without a goal for the first time in a then-Division I leading 30 games.
Ikeda is part of a defensive unit that currently ranks first in the nation in scoring defense (5.00 goals allowed/game), while supporting goalkeeper Kyle Bernlohr - the Division I leader in GAA (4.91) and save percentage (.696).
The award is the third Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor for the Terps and first for Ikeda.
No. 8 Maryland carries its three-game winning streak north for a matchup at No. 15 Villanova on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
