ROSEMONT, Ill. – After earning his ninth win of the season in a 13-strickout performance against Cal State Fullerton sophomore right hander Mike Shawaryn earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday.
Shawaryn dominated the Titans, giving up no runs over eight innings. His 13 strikeouts marked a new career high and Shawaryn did not walk a batter.
The Carneys Point, N.J., native's victory tied him with John Rayne (1989-92) for Maryland's all-time career wins record. His 20 wins represent the most for any sophomore in the country.
The sophomore leads the nation in wins and is tops in the Big Ten in strikeouts with 82. Shawaryn previously captured Big Ten weekly honors on April 13, March 19 and Feb. 23.
