GymTerps Prepare For NCAA Regional Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The Maryland gymnastics team continues its postseason run on Saturday, as they compete in the Auburn NCAA Gymnastics Regional. It marks the seventh consecutive NCAA appearance for the team and 21st overall in program history.

Maryland (14-9-1, 2-7 Big Ten) will compete against four ranked teams in #5 Alabama, #8 Auburn, #17 Minnesota and #23 Iowa. Additionally, the regional will be rounded out with George Washington. The top two finishers in each regional will compete in the NCAA Championship in Texas.

This Weekend In The Gym

Saturday's meet will start at 7:00 p.m. ET and take place in the Auburn Arena on the campus of Auburn University. Tickets for the meet can be purchased HERE. For more information, visit the NCAA Regional website HERE.

Last Time Out

  • The GymTerps posted a season-high team total (196.075) en route to a seventh place finish at the Big Ten Championships.
  • Maryland tallied a 49.025 on beam, the highest team score on the apparatus all season, and the first ime reaching the 49.000 plateau in 2015.
  • Karen Tang tied for fifth on bars (9.900), while Abbie Epperson tied for fifth individually (9.900) on vault.
  • With the team score, the Terps clinched its seventh consecutive NCAA Appearance.
  • Karen Tang was named to the All-Big Ten Championships team for her stellar performance on bars.

The Opponents

  • Alabama currently sits at fifth nationally and is coming off back-to-back SEC Championships. The team tallied a 197.525 team total en route to a first place finish.
  • Auburn currently ranks eighth in the nation and is coming off a fourth place finish at the SEC Championships. The team totaled a 196.925 and is the second seed in the regional.
  • Minnesota currently ranks 17th in the nation and placed sixth at the Big Ten Championships a few weekends ago with a score of 196.450. Earlier this season, the Terrapins defeated the Gophers 194.325-193.350.
  • Iowa currently ranks tied for 23rd in the nation and last time out, placed fifth at the Big Ten Championships. The Hawkeyes racked a score of 196.500 in the event. Earlier this season Iowa topped Maryland 195.725-195.275 in Iowa City.
  • George Washington racked a 195.850 as they placed first in its first-ever EAGL Championship. The Terps and Colonials faced each other twice this season. The Terps last tied GW during its annual Pink Meet.

Last season, the GymTerps qualified for the University Park NCAA Regional. The Terps placed sixth, tallying a score of 194.525. Stephanie Giameo tied for fifth on beam with a 9.825, while Kathy Tang tied for tenth on vault with a 9.850.

Giameo and Tang earn Second Team All-Big Ten Honors

  • Seniors Stephanie Giameo and Karen Tang were named to the All-Big second team this past week.
  • Giameo currently ranks tenth in the Big Ten on beam and 49th in the nation. She has a 9.860 RQS on the event.
  • Tang currently ranks fifth in the Big Ten on bars and 29th nationally. She has a 9.885 RQS on the apparatus.

Nine GymTerps Tabbed For All-Big Ten Academic Honors

Vaulting to the top

  • The team currently ranks 20th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten on vault. The team recorded a season-high team score of 49.150 vs. Iowa (1/30) and at TWU (3/1).
  • Dodds recorded a season-high score of 9.875 this season at Rutgers (2/14).
