COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team (13-0) overcame a two-goal halftime deficit to defeat No. 15 Princeton (8-3), 18-10, Wednesday evening at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
The Terrapins scored 14 second-half goals after going down 6-4 at halftime. Megan Whittle led the team with six scores and Kelly McPartland added five goals. Kristen Lamon recorded a hat trick while Taylor Cummings and Zoe Stukenberg each had a pair of goals.
“I think tonight was the tale of two halves,” said head coach Cathy Reese. “I give Princeton a lot of credit. They came out and fought hard and really challenged us in the first half.”
Princeton took a 2-0 lead nine minutes into the game before two Lamon goals, both assisted by Brooke Griffin, tied the game. McPartland gave the Terps the lead a 12:43. Whittle scored on a free-position opportunity, but the Tigers scored three of the final four goals in the half, and Maryland trailed at the half for the first time this season.
Three straight Terrapin goals out of the break gave Maryland the lead back. Princeton tied the game for the final time at 22:03. The Terps rattled off the next seven goals in just over six minutes, including a hidden-ball goal from McPartland. A free-position from Princeton broke the scoring streak, but Stukenberg caused a turnover and scored to push Maryland to a 15-8 lead.
Cummings scored twice in nine seconds, including a goal off the draw, and Whittle finished a free position as the Terps took an 18-8 lead. The Tigers put two more on the board, but Maryland took the 18-10 win.
Alex Fitzpatrick made six saves and picked up a ground ball in the win.
The Terps held a 35-17 advantage in shots, including a 26-5 lead in the second half. Maryland held a 14-11 advantage in ground balls and an 18-12 lead in draw controls.
