ROSEMONT, Ill. – After her performance at the Big Ten Track and Field Championships, University of Maryland senior Thea LaFond has been named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday.
LaFond soared 13.48m on her final attempt of the triple jump competition in East Lansing. She also earned Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships and her mark is the third best in the nation this season. He also was named first team All-Big Ten.
LaFond's weekend also included a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.16m. This jump saw her jump into the country's top-50 performers in the long jump.
The senior's marks have been among the nation's best in multiple events. LaFond's season best of 1.85m in the high jump at the Florida Relays ranks tied for ninth in the country and placed her second in that event in a tough field.
At that competition, LaFond was a part of Maryland's shuttle relay team that set a new school record of 55.85.
LaFond also finished second in the triple jump at the Morgan State Legacy Meet.
Maryland returns to action at the NCAA East Regionals in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 28.
