COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland men's lacrosse junior Kyle Bernlohr has been selected as the 2015 Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award winner, which is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding goalkeeper in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse by the USILA.
A Maryland goalie has captured the award two seasons in-a-row, as former Terrapin Niko Amato won the Kelly Award in 2014. It is the first time a school has won the award in consecutive seasons with different goalies since 1961-62 (Johns Hopkins).
Bernlohr is the sixth Terrapin in history to win the award and the eighth overall since the Kelly Award was first given out in 1949.
Maryland's Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award Winners
Kyle Bernlohr: 2015
Niko Amato: 2014
Brian “Doc” Dougherty: 1995, 1996
John Schofield: 1965
James Kappler: 1955, 1956, 1957
William Larash: 1952
Bernlohr sat for three years behind four-time All-ACC honoree Amato, before getting the chance to be the full-time starter between the pipes for Maryland in 2015.
The Akron, Ohio, native has taken full advantage of the opportunity, recently being named USILA First Team All-America while leading the nation's top scoring defense (6.65 goals against/g) to its fourth NCAA Final Four in the past five seasons.
Bernlohr's 6.57 goals against average has led the nation the entire season, and is nearly an entire goal better than the second-ranked goalkeeper (Benny Pugh, Richmond – 7.42). Bernlohr also ranks third in the country with a .589 save percentage.
Bernlohr and the Terrapins are set to face rival Johns Hopkins in the NCAA Semifinals Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The winner will take on Notre Dame or Denver in the National Championship Monday at 1 p.m.
