COLLEGE PARK, Md.— After a successful 2015 campaign, the Maryland gymnastics team celebrated the season and its accomplishments at the annual end-of-year team banquet on Sunday. Student-athletes, coaches and support staff gathered to commemorate the GymTerps' inaugural season in the Big Ten.
"Today was a great way to recognize and celebrate the season," Head coach Brett Nelligan said. "I am so proud of all we accomplished this year and am so grateful to be a part of such a great program."
The coaching staff distributed numerous season awards honoring and recognizing the accolades of the team.
Senior Shannon Skochko and junior Kathy Tang were named the team's most valuable players. Dani Kram was awarded the Maryland Pride Award for her work within the Maryland community and the Maryland Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
For the fourth consecutive season, Stephanie Giameo was bestowed the Dynamite Beam Award for her consistent efforts and performances on the apparatus. Seniors Ebony Walters and Shannon Skochko were given the Iron Terp Award and the Most Improved, respectively.
Freshmen Abbie Epperson, Dominiquea Trotter, Evelyn Nee and sophomore Leah Slobodin were named letter winners for the season, as Epperson and Trotter were also named Co-Rookies of the Year. Sarah Faller received the Positive Mental Attitude Award, while Slobodin was also given the Timex Award.
The team finished the season with a 14-9-1 record and qualified for NCAA Regionals for the seventh consecutive season. At Regionals the GymTerps placed third, its highest Regional finish since 2001.
In addition, the team finished in the top-25 nationally and fifth in the Big Ten in attendance.
