College Park, Md. – Maryland Athletics, in conjunction with the Emerging Leaders Program and the Life Skills and Career Development department, launched “InTERPship Academy” on Monday.
The “InTERPship Academy” is a new and innovative initiative provided for current Maryland student-athletes to develop and gain experience in the workplace.
“This program was developed as part of our 'Maryland Way' in an effort to educate, develop and serve student-athletes,” said director of athletics Kevin Anderson. “Our vision is to develop well-rounded student-athletes who will become outstanding leaders in their respective communities.”
The program is directed by Lori Ebihara, senior associate athletics director/senior women's administrator/chief of staff and Dr. Sue Sherburne, assistant athletics director for life skills & career development.
“We look forward to providing student-athletes the opportunity to continue to enhance their interpersonal and professional skills and gain confidence and experience in the workplace,” Sherburne said.
The Emerging Leaders Program members are Stephen Darville (Academic Support & Career Development), Cody Gambler (Compliance), Nick Havas (Facilities, Operations & Events), Courtney Hoffman (Academic Support & Career Development), Kristen Lundy (Academic Support & Career Development), Mike Sanders (Business Office), Matt Smale (Business Office) and Lauren Taylor (Marketing).
“This is a good first step toward career development,” said Hannah Dewey, junior softball player. “I like this program because the members of the athletics department took the time to gauge my interests and are placing me in a position to learn about the various departments in athletics.”
Senior wrestler TJ Guidice, who is majoring in family science, is an aspiring athletic director excited about the program.
“I've had a chance to meet a lot of the administrators and coaches at Maryland and they place a large emphasis on career development,” Guidice said. “This program is another step towards preparing us for our postgraduate future.”
Each student-athlete will be paired with members of the athletics department to learn about their responsibilities and the internal and external internship opportunities in various career fields.
The program launched today (June 1) and will continue for the following eight weeks (July 24).
