RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Tom Harris of the Maryland men's golf team won the Janney VCU Shootout Tuesday at The Country Club of Virginia for the first individual title of his career. Harris finished 10 under par in the 54-hole event to seal the win.
Harris shot a career-best six-under par 66 in the first round Monday, then added a 69 in the second round. He shot a 71 in the third round to finish with a combined score of 206 (66-69-71). This is the first individual title for Harris. He is the second Terrapin to win the Janney VCU Shootout, after Sean Bosdosh won in 2012.
Sophomore David Kocher finished tied for second in the 83-player field with his combined score of 211 (71-72-68). This is the best finish of Kocher's career so far.
“This was a great event for both Tom Harris and David Kocher,” head coach Jason Rodenhaver said. “Tom was in total control of his game this week. Best ball striking performance I've ever scene from a college golfer. David continues to play at a high level for us. We have a week off before we head to Akron, hopefully we can all get playing our best games like these two did.”
Freshman Reilly Erhardt earned a score of 234 (77-78-79) overall. Freshman Timothy Colanta shot a 235 (81-76-78) in the event and junior Victor Fox earned a combined score of 237 (81-80-76). Freshman Chris Navarro shot a 240 (76-85-79) in his first collegiate event.
Next, the Terrapins will compete in the Firestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio on Oct. 5.
