Terrapins Fall to Eagles, 3-2, in Overtime

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa.  – The third-ranked Maryland field hockey team scored late in regulation to force overtime against 13th-ranked Boston College, but the Eagles scored in the extra period to claim Friday's matchup at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex.

Graduate student Faye Curran tied the game with just over four minutes to play, but the Terrapins  (2-1) fell in 7 vs. 7 overtime.

"Maryland started out very strong, played really good hockey," head coach Missy Meharg said. "BC really stepped up their game. That was problematic for Maryland, but I applaud BC. They really took their game to another level. We have some things to work on. It's nice this time of the season to be able to get our freshmen overtime experience."

Redshirt junior Emma Rissinger, who grew up 10 miles from the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lititz, Pa., put the Terrapins on the board 2:32 into the match with a hard shot into the low part of the cage.

Maryland controlled the rest of the first half with seven shots to Boston College's four.

Eight and a half minutes into the second half, the Eagles (3-0) scored the equalizer off a penalty corner. Romee Stiekema knocked it in. Just about four minutes later, the Eagles' AshLeigh Sebia poked one in off a rebound on another penalty corner to give Boston College a 2-1 lead with 22:07 to go.

The Eagles called timeout with 11:21 to play. During the timeout, the umpires paused the game for 77 minutes due to lightning in the area.

With 4:22 to play, Curran sent in a shot off a penalty corner to tie the game. Anna Dessoye and Rissinger assisted on the play.

The Terps took 14 shots to 12. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jill Genovese picked up four saves.

Next, the Terrapins will play No. 5 Duke (1-1) Sunday at 3 p.m., after the Northwestern-Boston College matchup at noon.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students with an ID or children 14 and under.

The Terrapins will be hosting a clinic on Saturday at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex from 12-2 p.m. Admission is $25 per athlete. Click here for ticket and registration info.
