Kicking It Off: Maryland defeated Richmond, 50-21, in both teams' season-openers Saturday at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. Maryland improved to 13-5-1 all-time against Richmond, and extended its winning streak to five games in the series.
On Openers: Randy Edsall improved his season-opening record at Maryland to 5-0 (12-5 overall as a head coach), as Maryland won its sixth straight season-opener as a program. The Terps have won 11 of their last 12 season-openers. Maryland has also won 12 straight season-openers at home. The program is 77-44-2 all-time in season-openers.
Likely in the Record Books: Junior William Likely recorded a Big Ten and Maryland record 233 punt return yards. The total surpassed a Big Ten record that had stood since 1939, when Iowa's Nile Kinnick notched 201 punt return yards. Likely moved into fifth in program history with 663 career punt return yards.
Likely Part II: William Likely returned a punt for a touchdown, moving into a tie for second in Maryland history with three career punt return touchdowns. Steve Suter is the all-time leader with six.
Runnin' Ross: Senior Brandon Ross ran for a career-best 150 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries (8.3 yards/rush). It was Ross' sixth career 100-yard performance – tied for seventh-most in Maryland history. He surpassed 1,700 career rushing yards and moved into 17th in Maryland history with 1,735 career yards on the ground.
Receiving Corps: Quarterback Perry Hills passed to eight different Maryland receivers Saturday, including a pair of touchdown strikes to Levern Jacobs and Malcolm Culmer. It was Culmer's first career touchdown snag and Jacobs' first since Dec. 27, 2013 against Marshall.
Hills Gets the Win: Perry Hills started his first game under center since October 20, 2012, and earned the win Saturday against Richmond.
Carter Sets Tackling High: Sophomore linebacker Jermaine Carter, Jr. finished the game with a team-best and career-high eight tackles (five solo) and 1.0 TFL. His previous best was six tackles against West Virginia on Sept. 13, 2014.
Jefferson in the Backfield: Redshirt junior defensive lineman Quninton Jefferson played in his first game since Sept. 13, 2014, and totaled a career-high 2.5 tackles for loss.
Through the Uprights: Reining Lou Groza Award winner Brad Craddock matched his career-high by knocking down three field goals. He is just the third kicker in Maryland history to hit 50 career field goals.
