Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa.  – After a 70 minute defensive battle, the third-ranked Maryland field hockey team was edged 2-1 in overtime by No. 5 Duke in the Big Ten/ACC Cup at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex Sunday. The game was scoreless through the first 40 minutes, then a late push by the Terrapins (2-2) forced the extra period.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jill Genovese notched a career-high six saves in the match as both teams pressured the opposing defenses. The Terps took 17 shots to Duke's 14 and had eight penalty corners to seven.

“For the second weekend of the season, it feels like early November, “ head coach Missy Meharg said. “The emotions, the opportunity of going to overtime twice. Our team played a very solid game today. We were just a bit unlucky to not put in a lot of goals, especially in the first half, when we had a lot of shots. We will work very hard, very diligently on framing the goal cage. I applaud Duke and BC. They were very opportunistic in overtime.”

The Blue Devils (3-1) were the first to get on the board with a goal by Aileen Johnson five minutes into the second half off a rebounded shot.

Redshirt junior Emma Rissinger, playing less than 10 miles from her hometown, netted the equalizer with just one second on the clock in regulation time. The Terrapins restarted the ball with under 10 seconds to play, then Rissinger tipped in a shot off a rebound to force the extra time.

In 7 vs. 7 overtime, Duke scored on a penalty corner in the 79th minute to nab the victory. Morgan Bitting tipped in the goal.

Next, the Terrapins will host No. 7 Albany Friday at 4 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex as part of the Terrapin Invitational. Admission is free. The Terps-Great Danes matchup will be streamed live through BTN Plus.
