MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Redshirt freshman Ryan Diehl and redshirt junior Shyheim Brown both posted undefeated records in the 149-pound weight class to highlight Maryland's day at the Shorty Hitchcock Invitational hosted by Millersville University Saturday.
Diehl got his day started at the top of the bracket with a 16-0 technical fall over Chris Schoenherr (Finger Lakes WC), then advanced out of the second round with a 6-2 decision over James Dekrone (West Virginia). The Berkeley Springs, W.V. native then knocked off Joe Oliva (Penn) by decision (9-7) in the quarterfinals, before capping off his 4-0 day with an 8-3 decision over Jason Gaccione (Millersville). Diehl now sports a 13-4 record on the season, and has rattled off nine consecutive victories.
Brown also put together an undefeated day on the bottom of the 149-pound bracket, beginning with a 16-0 technical fall over Jalen Palmer (Kutztown). The Harrisburg, Pa. product then defeated Thomas Dutton (Harvard) 10-4 in the quarters, before securing his second technical fall (18-3) of the afternoon over Chris Yankowich (Virginia) in the semis.
Redshirt junior Tyler Manion also had a solid day on the mat, winning four matches while advancing to the third place match in the 165-pound bracket. Manion posted two pins in matches vs. Will Scott (Rutgers) and Francisco Bisono (Penn State), before dropping his final bout of the day
Freshman Danny Boychuck (157) picked up three wins at the tournament, including a fall over Michael Eckhart (American University) in 44 seconds. His day ultimately came to an end with a loss in the semifinals of wrestlebacks. Fellow freshman Josh Ugalde also finished with three wins advancing to the third place match of the 174-pound bracket.
Freshman Breandan Coughlin (125) went 1-2 at the event, earning a pin over Josh Antoine (Nassau Community College) at 1:08 in his victory.
Maryland will be back in dual match competition tomorrow when the team wrestles Big Ten counterpart Purdue (6-2, 1-1 Big Ten) on the road at 1:00 pm. The match will be broadcast on BTN Plus.
