umterps Notebook: 100 Points & More
1/20/2016 12:00:00 AM | Terrapin Athletics
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Which of these has happened more recently – Maryland men's basketball scoring 100 points in a game or the Terps having five players averaging double-digit points? You'll find out the answer to that question and more in this week's umterps Notebook.
Hitting The Century Mark
Last Saturday's 100-65 win over Ohio State is Maryland's first 100-point game since a 100-68 victory over UMES on Dec. 5, 2012, which also makes it just the second 100-point game in Mark Turgeon's tenure as the Terps' head coach.
It's been a lot longer than that since the Terrapins have put up triple-digits vs. a conference opponent.
The last time was during the magical 2001-02 season (Hmmmmm, coincidence?) when Maryland closed out the final game in Cole Field House with a 112-92 win over Virginia. Juan Dixon led the way with 23 points, while Chris Wilcox added 21 and Lonny Baxter had 20 vs. the Cavaliers.
In total, Maryland has hit 100 points or more 110 times and just 26 of those have come vs. a conference opponent and four of those 26 times came in overtime games.
Saturday's 100 points vs. the Buckeyes also marked the first time Maryland hit the century mark vs. a Big Ten opponent – ever!
Double-Digit Scorers
This season's Maryland men's basketball team boasts five Terps averaging better than 10 points per game.
This is the first time in 10 seasons that there have been five double-digit scorers for a Terrapin men's basketball team and it's just the fourth time in the past 25 seasons.

In case you're wondering if Maryland has ever had more than five double-digit scorers – it has. The 1974-75 team that won the ACC and advanced to the NCAA tournament Elite Eight had six double-digit scorers.
74-75 (6): John Lucas (19.5), Owen Brown (14.9), Steve Sheppard (14.3), Maurice Howard (13.4), Brad Davis (12.6), Tom Roy (11.0)

To put it in perspective, the 1974-75 team averaged 89.9 points per game, which is still the school record. This year's Terps team is putting up 79.0 points per game.
Stepping Up
Since dropping its first conference game since joining the Big Ten to Ohio State on Jan. 2, the Maryland women's basketball team has been on a tear, winning its next four games by an average margin of 23.5 points.
During that four-game stretch five Terps have averaged more than 10 points per game.
Shatori Walker-Kimbrough has led the way with a 15.0 scoring average, which is just above Brionna Jones, who has posted a 13.3 average. Brene Moseley has also been sharp, chipping in at an 11.8 clip.
Those numbers are in line with their season scoring averages, but the big difference during the past four games has been the production of Kristen Confroy and Tierney Pfirman.
Confroy is averaging 11.5 points during the four-game winning streak, up from her season average of 7.8 ppg after the Ohio State game. She posted a career-high 24 points to lead the Terps over Northwestern on Jan. 17.
Pfirman was averaging 7.1 points per game heading into the Nebraska game on Jan. 7, but has raised that to 8.2 ppg after averaging 10.3 ppg in the Terps' last four games.
Remembering Clayton “Bud” Beardmore
One of the great head coaches in the history of the University of Maryland, Clayton “Bud” Beardmore, passed away today.
Beardmore was a three time All-American as a midfielder for the Terps from 1961-63, including first team honors as a junior and senior. When he finished his collegiate career he held the record for career points by a midfielder (108), which was later eclipsed by Frank Urso.
After beginning his coaching career at Hobart and the University of Virgina, Beardmore returned to his alma mater and led the Terrapins for 11 seasons from 1970-80.
Beardmore guided the 1973 and 1975 teams to the school's only NCAA men's lacrosse championships and never failed to lead the Terps to at least the Final Four during his first 10 seasons.
Coach Beardmore left a legacy that will carry, which is evident in the memories and testimonials from former players, former coaches and current head coach John Tillman in the Baltimore Sun's obituary.
