CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman Arnelle Sullivan won her match at No. 2 singles, but the No. 66 Maryland women's tennis team fell. 5-2, to BYU in the consolation match at the ITA Season Kick-off at the Boars Head Sports Club Saturday morning.

The Terrapins (0-2) also picked up the doubles point, but were unable to secure the two other singles points needed to take the match. Freshman Caroline Williams stretched her match to three sets, but the contest went unfinished.

Maryland jumped out to a quick lead in the doubles session. Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan eased past Taylah Beckman and Toby Miclat, 6-2, before Nataliya Bredikhina and Williams rolled Nicolette Poulson by the same score at the No. 2 spots.

In singles, Maryland dropped the match at No. 4, only to see Sullivan tie the score with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Savannah Ware at the second singles spot, 6-0, 6-2. BYU would then win at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 to clinch the match.

Williams stretched her match to three sets stanza before dropping the final set and losing the match, 6-3, 5-7, 5-4 (8-6). It was Williams second three-set match of the weekend.

Maryland returns to action next Saturday in its home opener against James Madison. Action is scheduled to begin at noon at the Tennis Center at College Park.
