BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Maryland women's cross country squad returned to action Saturday, running against a deep field at the 43rd Annual Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh. The Terps took 18th (541 points) in the field of the Women's College “Gold” 6k race, which featured a trio of teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Cross Country Poll.
Freshman Kathryn Gearhart led the pack for Maryland once again, finishing in 21:10 to take 77th overall. Junior Alexandra Lucki wasn't far behind, finishing in 21:17 to place 86th as she made her 2016 debut.
Sophomore Jennifer Hedin also competed in her first race of the 2016 campaign, posting a mark of 21:26 to place 103rd and finish as Maryland's No. 3 runner. Seniors Sydney Almeida (21:29) and Alexa Squirini (21:52) both made it into the top five for the Terps, taking 108th and 167th (respectively).
Freshman Caroline Augelli (22:29) and senior Charde' Barnes (22:47) rounded of the field for UMD, as the squad knocked off over two minutes of its total time (1:47.14) from last season's event.
Yale claimed the team title with a combined score of 92 points on five top-40 finishes. Villanova's Angel Piccirillo claimed the individual title with a time of 19:57. Maryland will return to competition on Saturday, October 15 at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
