ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior Welma Luus of the fifth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (12-3, 6-1 B1G) was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday for the third time in her career.
Luus wasted no time getting the Terrapins on the board at then-No. 5 Penn State (14-2, 4-2), as she scored 2:30 into the match for the early lead. She took a pass from Grace Balsdon into the circle and ripped a hard shot into the lower corner of the cage.
Penn State would tie it up before halftime, then Maryland freshman Kelee Lepage scored early in the second for the lead. Luus added an insurance goal for the Terrapins when she deflected in a pass from Emma Rissinger in the 44th minute. Her score made it a 4-2 lead for Maryland, who went on to win 5-4.
With the win, the Terps clinched at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title for the fourth straight season. Maryland is 21-2 in Big Ten play since joining the league in 2014
Luus leads the Terps with 12 goals and 11 assists. She was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice last year en route to being named to the All-Big Ten Second Team and the NFHCA All-America Second Team.
Next, the Terrapins return home to host No. 1 Connecticut (15-0) Sunday at noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Admission and parking are both free.
The matchup will be the Terrapins' annual Pink Game for breast cancer awareness. The first 50 fans in attendance will receive pink pom-poms and wristbands. The Terrapins will also sign autographs after the match.
