Balsdon Earns Third Weekly Honor

ROSEMONT, Ill. –  Graduate student Grace Balsdon of the third-ranked Maryland field hockey team (13-3) was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday for the third time this season.

Balsdon led the Terrapins' defense to a masterful effort that led to a 2-1 victory over #1 Connecticut (16-1) Sunday. After the Huskies took the early lead five minutes in off of a penalty corner, Balsdon tied the match with a perfect drag flick score into the top right corner of the cage in the 23rd minute.

Maryland took the lead just before half off a goal by Welma Luus, then Balsdon and the defense anchored down in the second half to preserve the win. The Terrapins held the nation's top scoring team to well under its average of 5.41 goals per game and the nation's top goal scorer, UConn's Charlotte Veitner, scoreless. They dealt the Huskies their first loss of the season.
