COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The second-seeded Maryland field hockey team (18-4) advanced to the NCAA Second Round with a 2-1 victory in a shootout over Massachusetts (14-8) Saturday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

UMass scored in the first 10 minutes and the Terrapins pushed for the equalizer throughout the game, finally tying off a Grace Balsdon penalty stroke with 1:05 to play. The Terps continued to put offensive pressure on the Minutewomen throughout the 30 minutes of overtime and won in a shootout.

“We couldn't be more excited to be advancing,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “It was a day of survival and advancing. UMass is a tremendous team. They are so well-coached and their technical skills are so strong. For Maryland, it took a little adjusting. When we came into sorts, we played very strong attack”

The Minutewomen scored in the ninth minute when Sarah Hawkshaw broke away for a goal. UMass would lead 1-0 at halftime.

The Terrapins pressured UMass' defense throughout the second half, taking eight shots and controlling the ball the entire period.

Maryland was awarded a penalty corner with 1:16 to play. The initial shot was saved, but the Terrapins were awarded a penalty stroke with 1:05 left. Graduate defender Grace Balsdon took the stroke and buried it to tie the match.

The Terrapins once again controlled the ball through much of both overtimes, taking nine shots to the Minutewomen's four.

In the shootout, redshirt junior Brooke Adler stepped up first for the Terrapins and buried it. Anne Dijkstra went first for UMass and her shot was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Holliday. Junior Lein Holsboer went next for Maryland and made her shot as well. Next, Celina Hocks went for Massachusetts and Holliday blocked her until time expired.

Junior Carrie Hanks took the third shot for the Terrapins and buried a back-handed shot into the net. Hawkshaw went third for UMass and Holliday blocked her shot to clinch the win for the Terps.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sarah Bates made three saves in her 95 minutes in goal.

The Terrapins move on to play North Carolina (17-5) or Stanford (14-5) Sunday at 2 p.m. in the NCAA Second Round at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
