COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The second-seeded Maryland field hockey team fell to No. 4 North Carolina, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Quarterfinals at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

“The outcome is very disappointing, because of the outcome and because it is the last game of your season,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “It's knockout time and North Carolina has great set pieces. The two penalty corner shots put us on our heels. We're very proud of the women for the way that we competed. We had a great game plan and they executed it very well. It would have been nice to get some goals in there, but credit to Carolina. They're very organized and their set pieces were outstanding.”

North Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Ashley Hoffman scored off of the first penalty corner of the day for either team. The Tar Heels would lead 1-0 at the half.

Two minutes into the second half, Hoffman scored again for the Tar Heels to make it a two-goal lead with just over 32 minutes left in the match.

Maryland pulled goalkeeper Sarah Bates from the cage with 6:42 to play in favor of an extra field player

A little over a minute later, the Tar Heels' Lauren Moyer got behind the Terps' defense and scored into the empty net.

Maryland took eight shots to the Tar Heel's 11 and had five penalty corners to four.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made two saves in her 41 minutes in goal and Bates made two as well in her 28 minutes.

The Terrapins won the Big Ten regular season title with a record of 7-1 in conference play earlier this year.

Maryland has five seniors this year in Grace BalsdonCourtney DeenaDelaney LeathersWelma Luus and Emma Rissinger . Together, they've earned a record of 78-15. This class has played in a Final Four, won an ACC title and won three Big Ten titles.
