RALEIGH, N.C. – Maryland had a handful of wrestlers in open tournament action on Sunday at the Wolfpack Open hosted at North Carolina State.
Freshman Vincent DiFilippo (165) turned in a solid day on the mat, posting a team-high three pins to finish 3-2 overall on the day. He opened up his tourney with a pin over Nicolas Carey at 0:30, before getting his second straight fall on the day over NC State's Thomas Bullard at 4:35. After getting bounced to the consolation bracket, DiFilippo rebounded with his third pin at the event over Joe Perino (Davidson).
Redshirt freshman Garrett Griffith (165) was also a three-match winner, which included two by sudden victory. He opened the day with a 4-3 decision vs. Alex Bennett (Gardner-Webb), then won back-to-back sudden victories over Josh Walker (Gardner-Webb) and Will MacDonald (Unattached) in the consolation ladder.
Wade Hodges (157) picked up his second fall of the year, putting Chad Pyke (NC State) to the mat at 5:11. He went 2-2 overall on the day, and moves to 6-4 on the season. Freshman Hunter Lucas tabbed two wins at the open, defeating Evan Quinn (Unattached) and Zac Thomas (Gardner-Webb) both by major decision.
The Terps will resume competition next Sunday, November 27 at the Grapple at the Garden in New York City
