#6/5 Terps Overpower Mary Baldwin in Exhibition

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The fifth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team overpowered Mary Baldwin, 153-27, Sunday at the XFINITY Center in the Terrapins' final preseason exhibition matchup.

Nine Terrapins scored in double figures, led by freshman Jenna Staiti with 25 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Kaila Charles added 18 points, while Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Kiah Gillespie and freshman Blair Watson each scored 17.

“I think that these exhibitions give our kids the experience of a game day more so than a closed scrimmage,” head coach Brenda Frese. “Just putting on the jerseys and playing in front of our fans, that experience is really, really valuable for us. When you look at our team, with six freshmen, being able to get a lot of minutes on the floor for them and for them to gain that type of experience is important. We were able to change up our defenses and our offenses and work through some more of our sets a little bit more today. We obviously have a lot of scoring power on this roster, so you can see that in terms of our different rotations."

The Terps outscored the Fighting Squirrels, 48-2 in the first quarter by shooting 56.8 percent from the field (21-37).

Maryland had just seven turnovers on the day, while picking up 40 assists and 35 steals.

The Terrapins are ranked sixth in the Associated Press preseason poll and No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches preseason poll.

Maryland was picked to win the Big Ten title by both the league's head coaches and media panel, the conference announced last week. The Terrapins have won the last two Big Ten regular season and tournament titles since joining the conference in 2014.

Seniors Brionna Jones and Walker-Kimbrough were named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Teams by the head coaches and the media panel as well. Both were unanimous selections to the 10-player team, voted by the coaches.

The Terrapins will officially open the season with a 1 p.m. matchup with UMass-Lowell on Sunday, Nov. 13. Tickets are available through the Terrapin Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP or umterps.com. Fans will have an opportunity to interact with members of the team after the game at the annual Meet the Team event.
