Red Defeats Black in Annual Intrasquad Scrimmage

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland gymnastics team posted consistent routines in the team's annual Red-Black instrasquad scrimmage Friday evening. The Red team defeated the Black squad, 187.800-186.600.

“I think we saw a lot of great stuff tonight, so that gives me encouragement as we move into the season,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “We're focused on January right now and being ready for our first meet. Tonight was great preparation, to see who came out aggressively and hit their sets in front of the crowd.”

Freshman Alecia Farina posted a strong all-around performance in her first meet as a Terp. Farina anchored vault, bars and floor for the Red team and tied for the highest score on each apparatus.

Both teams began the meet on vault, where senior Sarah Faller and Farina anchored with 10.0's for the Red team.

The Red team moved to bars, where Faller and sophomore Alex Robinson led off with 10.0's. The Black team moved to beam, where senior Emily Brauckmuller led off and junior Evelyn Nee anchored with 10.0's.

Three Terps on the Red squad post 9.95's on beam, including freshman Deanna Magro, Farina and Faller. On beam for the Black team, sophomore Shynelle Agaran anchored with a 9.95.

The teams finished the event on floor. Freshman Emma Johnson and Brauckmuller posted 9.90's for the Black squad while Farina finished the night for the Terps with a 9.95.

The Terps were judged by fellow Maryland student-athletes Eryk Williamson and Sebastian Elney (men's soccer), Oseh Saine and Jalen Brooks (football), Caroline Williams and Arnelle Sullivan (tennis), and Nell Drummey and Kelsey Wicinski (volleyball).

The Terrapins return a strong core of competitors this season, including seniors Faller and Brauckmuller. The Terps also welcome six freshmen who will help contribute immediately.

Maryland opens the 2017 season against West Virginia on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. The team will compete in their annual Beauty and the Beast meet while wrestling competes against Navy at the same time in the XFINITY Center main arena.
