NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The #4 Maryland men's lacrosse team fell to #7 Yale, 8-5, Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium.
Freshman Austin Henningsen was tremendous for the Terrapins (1-1), winning 13-of-16 faceoffs. The rookie is now 22-of-28 (.786) through two games on the season.
Junior attackman Matt Rambo tallied four points for the Terps en route to becoming the 49th player in Maryland men's lacrosse history to record 100 career points. He matched his career-high with three assists.
The Terrapins started the game strong, as sophomore Connor Kelly notched his first goal of the season on a feed from Rambo less than four minutes into the game. Yale's Michael Keasey responded just over a minute later to square the game, 1-1.
Rambo then tallied another assist with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter on a goal by Dylan Maltz to give the Terps a 2-1 advantage. Similar to the first goal, however, Yale quickly matched with a strike of their own.
Carrying over an extra man opportunity from the first quarter, the Terps took a 3-2 lead on a Colin Heacock missile 29 seconds into the second frame.
The Bulldogs then took control with six unanswered goals to build an 8-3 lead.
Heacock and Rambo scored goals 13 seconds apart (on feeds from each other) with less than three minutes to play, but the comeback effort fell short as time expired.
The Terrapins return to action Saturday, March 5, as they face top-ranked Notre Dame in sunny Orange County, Calif. Maryland was victorious in last season's Pacific Coast Lax Shootout, defeating North Carolina.
