Shawaryn Named B1G Pitcher of the Week

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Shawaryn was lights out in his second start of the season against Rhode Island Friday, throwing eight shutout innings while allowing just one hit. The Carneys Point, N.J., native struck out five batters and did not allow a base runner after the fourth.

The junior retired 22-of-24 batters faced and did not give up a walk. Dating back to last season, Shawaryn has allowed three runs or less in 15 straight starts. He moved his all-time Maryland record for wins to 25, a mark that represents the most career wins of any junior in the country.

The weekly honor is Shawaryn's first of the season after he won Big Ten Pitcher of the Week four times last season. He currently holds a 1.38 ERA and his holding opponents to a .098 average.

Shawaryn's next start comes Friday at noon against Tennessee at the Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, N.C.
