UNIVERSTIY PARK, Pa. – A Bryan Cole goal with 43 seconds remaining in the first overtime pushed the No. 5 Maryland men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 11-10 victory over No. 14 Penn State Sunday evening.
It was the second straight game Cole had scored a game-winner for the Terps, who won their seventh consecutive game. Cole scored with 49 seconds left in last week's 8-7 win at Michigan.
Maryland (8-2, 2-0 B1G) found itself in an unfamiliar position trailing by four goals, 8-4, with 9:39 remaining in the second quarter.
It proved to be a turning point for the Terps.
Led by a career-high 14 saves by Kyle Bernlohr, Maryland allowed just two goals over the remaining 42:56. The run included seven goals for the Terps, which received a hat trick from both junior Colin Heacock and senior Henry West in the victory.
“I thought Kyle [Bernlohr] made some timely saves,” said head coach John Tillman. “Fourteen saves is always great, but I thought the saves were big ones. We just kept battling and fighting and I'm proud of our guys for winning on the road in a tough environment.”
The Terrapins were excellent at the faceoff X in the second half and overtime, winning 6-of-8 faceoffs. Sophomore Will Bonaparte was the catalyst, winning 11-of-17 faceoffs throughout the game.
Maryland returns to action Saturday at 4 pm at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium when it hosts Rutgers. The game will follow the annual Red-White Spring football game.
