Edmunds Feeling at Home With the Terps

By: Jake Spitz - Media Relations Student Assistant

When Trey Edmunds decided to transfer after graduating with a degree in Multimedia Journalism from Virginia Tech, Maryland stood out.

“I asked myself, 'Where could I maximize my fifth year the most?' and when it came down to it, Maryland was the perfect fit for me,” explained Edmunds. “It was an opportunity I needed to take advantage of.”

Ferrell Edmunds, Trey's father, also played at Maryland. The former tight end was a standout player for the Terrapins before being drafted in the third round of the 1988 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. However, his father's legacy at Maryland was not the main factor in his decision.

“After it was all said and done, my father coming here and making his name here was just a bonus,” said the Danville, Virginia native. “I didn't want to base my decision off that. I didn't want to go here so I could live off my father. However, I'm definitely proud and honored to play at the place he did and I'm going to do everything I can to live through his name.”

Perhaps what has Edmunds most excited about landing at Maryland for his final season, is the excitement surrounding the program since the arrival of Head Coach DJ Durkin. The 6-2, 223 pound running back knows the perfect word to describe his new coach.

“Intense,” Edmunds said with a smile. “I'm not sure if there's a word even stronger than intense, but if there is, that's the best way to describe Coach Durkin.”

Edmunds praises Durkin's work ethic and how his intensity has filtered through the entire coaching staff.

“The entire coaching staff has the “It” factor that just gets you going,” Edmunds said. “As players you want that. You want to be pushed every day and you want to be pushed to give your best performance every day because if you're not giving it your best, it's going to show. It's tough and hard at times, but we need it and we enjoy coming to work every day.”

With the spring chapter of the football season now closed, Edmunds is looking forward to what is ahead for the Terps.

“I'm happy, but not content,” he said. “I always feel there is room for improvement and growth, and the coaching staff and players have come to a mutual agreement that there is still room to grow in order to get to where we want to be.”

Edmunds is a veteran in a group of young running backs for the Terrapins this upcoming season. He believes he has a lot to offer on and off the field.

“I try to give them as much guidance as I can not only with football, but with life itself,” he explained. “I talk to them about things like taking care of your body in the off-season so you're ready come September.”

He also has experienced some personal growth during the off-season as well.

“I've definitely gotten stronger and I've gotten leaner,” Edmunds said. “The strength and conditioning coaches have helped me feel more in shape than I did last season.”

Edmunds is working towards a degree in Real Estate Development at Maryland and he hopes that his path up and work ethic throughout his collegiate career will translate into a very successful final season on and off the field.
