The Rivalry Renews Saturday in Baltimore
4/28/2016 12:00:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
The No. 5 Maryland men's lacrosse team and No. 8 Johns Hopkins renew the greatest rivalry in college lacrosse Saturday at 2pm at Homewood Field with major Big Ten Conference implications on the line. The Terrapins can capture the Big Ten Conference title outright with a victory, but would split the title with Hopkins (and possibly Rutgers) in the event of a loss. Save for a two-year gap (1944,45), Maryland and JHU have met every season since 1924.

Facing off
• Although Saturday's meeting marks the 105th matchup in history between Maryland and Johns Hopkins, it will be the first meeting in history at Homewood Field as conference foes. Maryland has won two if its last four games against Hopkins when the pair have met as top-10 foes.
• The Terps clinched at least a share of their second straight Big Ten crown with last week's 10-8 victory over Ohio State, marking their 28th conference title all-time. Matt Rambo was spectacular against the Buckeyes, matching his career-high with three assists while also scoring a pair of goals.
• While Senior Matt Dunn has the most experience against the Blue Jays with four games played, Matt Rambo (9 points) and Bryan Cole (8 points) have had the most offensive success in their careers against JHU. Rambo memorably had four goals and two assists in last season's NCAA Semifinal victory in Philadelphia.
• The Terps have allowed just six goals on 26 EMO chances (23%) - a mark that ranks fourth in the nation. That mark will be put to the test against a highly effificent Hopkins EMO offense that ranks fourth nationally with a 51% success rate.
• Maryland has stretched its winning streak to 10 games for the second consecutive season. It is currently the second longest streak in the nation, trailing only Air Force, which has won 12 straight games. It it also tied for the third-longest streak in Maryland history.
• Maryland recorded its 10th win of the season against Navy to extend its NCAA-best streak of 10-win seasons to 14 consecutive years dating back to 2003. Notre Dame has the second-most consecutive 10-win seasons (10), while Duke is third (8).
• Maryland has held its opponent scoreless for a drought of at least 20 minutes in each of its last three contests: Ohio State (23:42), Navy (20:58) and Rutgers (20:40). The Terrapin defense currently ranks eighth nationally, and has yet to allow more than 10 goals in 2016.
• Junior Colin Heacock leads the Terps with a career-high 30 goals this season, scoring at least two goals in 11-of-13 games. His 10-game scoring streak is the longest of his career and the longest active Maryland streak.
• The Terrapins are 60-4 under John Tillman when scoring at least 10 goals in a game, including a spectacular mark of 41-1 over the last four seasons. That trend has continued this season with a perfect 10-0 mark. Maryland is also 58-4 when leading at halftime under Tillman.
• Junior Matt Rambo scored two goals against OSU to reach 94 total goals for his career, passing Bob Boneillo (1977-80) and Andrew Whipple (1995-98) for 14th on the Maryland goals list. Rambo, who has tallied a point in 32 straight games, also ranks 25th in Maryland history with 133 career points.

Coaching Match-Up
• John Tillman is in his ninth season as a head coach, and sixth with the Terps, with a 94-44 career record for a .681 winning percentage. Tillman is 74-25 (.747) as Maryland's head coach.
• Johns Hopkins' Dave Pietramala is in his 16th season at the helm of the Blue Jays.
Series history vs. Johns Hopkins
• Maryland and Hopkins are the two most storied lacrosse programs in the nation, with the rivalry beginning back in 1895 as Hopkins defeated the Maryland Agricultural College. The Blue Jays (43) and Terps (38) have played in the first and third most NCAA Tournaments since the event began in 1971, respectively. Maryland and Hopkins have produced the most first team All-Americans in the history of lacrosse dating to the first awards in 1922.
• While this will be the 112th meeting between the two schools, Maryland's official record vs. Hopkins is 41-62-1. The first seven meetings between the two happened before lacrosse was an official sport at Maryland.
• Maryland and Johns Hopkins split the series last season, with Maryland getting revenge in the NCAA Semifinals in Philadelphia last season. Goalkeeper Kyle Bernlohr memorably made an incredible save with the butt end of his stick in the waning moments to preserve the victory for the Terps.
Terps run past ohio state, 10-8
• Maryland defeated Ohio State, 10-8, on April 24 to clinch at least a share of its second consecutive Big Ten regular season title.
• The Terps had seven different goal scorers, including two-goal performances by junior attackman Matt Rambo, junior attackman Colin Heacock and senior midfielder Bryan Cole. Rambo also matched his career-high with a trio of assists for a five-point effort to lead Maryland to their 10th-straight victory.
• During the run, the Terrapin defense held the Ohio State attack scoreless for a span of 24:42, marking the third straight contest Maryland has held its opponent scoreless for a span of 20 minutes or more.
MAryland Stifles Navy, 10-5
• Maryland defeated No. 7 Navy, 10-5, on April 19 to put a stamp on their NCAA-best 14th consecutive 10-win season and ninth consecutive victory.
• Maryland smothered the Navy attack, limiting the Mids to just 23 shots and 22 ground balls as senior Greg Danseglio caused three turnovers. Offensively junior Colin Heacock matched his career-high with four points (2G, 2A), while Connor Kelly, Tim Rotanz and Henry West each added two goals.
• The patented hard-shell defense stood tall once again holding the Navy offense scoreless for a period of 20:58 in the first half. Senior goalie Kyle Bernlohr made five stops on the night.
Maltz leads terps past Rutgers
• Maryland claimed sole possession of first place in the Big Ten Conference April 16 as it defeated No. 18 Rutgers, 11-8, on a career-high four goals from Dylan Maltz.
• The Terps found themselves trailing, 6-3, with 12:05 remaining in the third quarter before the offense caught fire, exploding for a seven-goal run and securing a lead they would never surrender. The win marked Maryland's eighth consecutive victory.
• The run, paced entirely by the starting attack unit, saw Maltz net three of his four goals on the day, while Colin Heacock (3G) and Matt Rambo (3G, 2A) each scored two of their three tallies, giving the Terps a 10-6 lead with 7:27 remaining in the contest.
Get To 10 And Win
• Since John Tillman took over the program in 2011, Maryland has won 60 of the 64 games in which it has scored 10 or more goals for a .938 winning percentage.
• The Terps have won 43 of their last 44 games when scoring at least 10 goals, only falling to Johns Hopkins during that streak in 2015.

Consecutive 10-Win Seasons
• Maryland's 10-5 win over 7th-ranked Navy on April 19, 2016 extended the Terps' streak of double-digit win seasons to 14, which is the longest active streak in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse.

TERPS' 91st SEASON OF LACROSSE
• The Terps boast an all-time record of 775-261-4 (.740), dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished every one of its previous 90 seasons with a .500 or better record, including last season when the Terps went 15-4. The program reached the 700-win milestone with a 15-6 victory over Penn on April 14, 2009 at Ludwig Field.
• During the decade of the 2000s, Maryland went 111-49 for a .694 win percentage, making it the winningest decade in Terrapin lacrosse history. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland posted a 95-47 record. The .669 winning percentage matched Maryland's win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went 83-41 and also compiled a .669 win percentage.
• So far, Maryland is 53-17 in the 2010's for a .757 winning percentage - on pace for the best decade in Maryland history.
