COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After being down 6-3 at halftime, the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team (11-0) rallied to defeat Johns Hopkins, 10-8, Wednesday evening at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
“Hopkins came out and did a good job capitalizing on their opportunities in the first half,” head coach Cathy Reese said. “I think we were able to get some better looks in the second half and make some smarter choices to get the win.”
Junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg led the Terps with two goals and one assist while sophomores Megan Whittle and Taylor Hensh each scored twice. Senior midfielder Taylor Cummings finished with one goal and one assist and junior Caroline Wannen, sophomore Kacie Longo and freshman Jen Giles each scored once.
Johns Hopkins started the scoring at 23:06 before Whittle tied the game less than a minute later by dodging to the right of the cage and scoring.
The Blue Jays' Dene' DiMartino scored twice to give the visitors the lead back. Wannen and Whittle helped the Terps tie the game at 3-3 at 12:36, but Johns Hopkins recorded three straight goals to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Hensh notched a free-position goal at 24:06 in the second half to help cut the lead before DiMartino tallied her fourth goal of the night. Stukenberg scored two straight, including one while falling toward the cage, as the Terps pulled within one, 7-6.
Giles scored on an 8-meter to tie the game at 7-7, before DiMartino scored on a free-position at 13:21. Longo notched a free position of her own at 12:33 to tie the game again and Hensh gave Maryland its first lead of the night at 11:25. Cummings added an insurance goal at 2:59, and the Terps were able to hold onto the ball to take the win.
Cummings picked up seven draw controls as Maryland held a 15-5 advantage in draws. Stukenberg caused two turnovers and finished with four ground balls.
Freshman goalie Megan Taylor put up a strong showing in cage, making eight saves.
The Terps resume Big Ten action at Rutgers (3-9) this Saturday at 7 p.m.
