Solomon Eye Terp of the Week: Mike Shawaryn

COLLEGE PARK, Md.For his record breaking performance against Penn State Friday night, junior right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn has been named Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week.

Shawaryn tossed his first career complete game in a shutdown performance against the Nittany Lions. The junior struck out six, including one in the third inning that broke the Maryland career record for strikeouts. Shawaryn now has a school record 276 Ks.

The Carneys Point, N.J., native now holds four school records (single season strikeouts, wins; career strikeouts, wins). He has given up just one run and struck out 16 to just two walks in his last 17 innings. Shawaryn ranks second in the Big Ten in opposing batting average (.189), 11th in innings pitched (69.0) and fifth in strikeouts (66).

“It was kind of tough to celebrate the record during the game,” Shawaryn said after the game. “I had a lot more innings to pitch. My first goal in the game is to win the game, but it's pretty special to have that record and be considered among those guys. They came before me and laid the groundwork to allow me to do what I have to do.”

Maryland returns to action against Towson Wednesday at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
