TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Maryland outfielder Marty Costes and second baseman Nick Dunn were named to the 2016 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team, selected by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and announced Wednesday.
With the honor, the duo gives Maryland five freshman All-Americans in the last three seasons, with RHP Mike Shawaryn and second baseman Brandon Lowe earning plaudits in 2014 before shortstop Kevin Smith was honored last season. Before 2014, Maryland had not had a freshman All-American since 2002.
Costes provided Maryland with 52 starts in the outfield this season and put up stellar power numbers. His nine home runs, .479 slugging percentage and 37 RBI led Maryland and all Big Ten freshmen. Costes also tallied 10 doubles and scored 36 times.
The Baltimore native was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team and was a two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree.
Dunn started all 57 games at second base, one of just two Terps to do so (Kevin Smith). He led Maryland in average (.300), on-base percentage (.382), doubles (16) and hits (68). He scored 39 times, a mark that led all Big Ten freshman, and drove in 31 runs.
A native of Sunbury, Pa., Dunn was selected to the All-Big Ten third team and the Big Ten All-Freshman team. He was the Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week on March 7, the first player to achieve that since Kyle Johnson for Purdue in 2013.
Maryland finished 2016 with its fifth consecutive 30-win season and an appearance in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
