Likely Earns Recognition for Work in the Community

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior William Likely garnered recognition for his outstanding work in the community on Wednesday when it was announced that the Maryland cornerback was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List and to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida.  Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel of the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Likely is also a nominee for the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, one of the most coveted off-the-field honors in college football. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the award, which was established in 1992 to recognize a select group of college football players who have made a commitment to service and enriching the lives of others.

Off the field, Likely has been heavily involved in numerous community service initiatives. He's worked with troubled students through a mentoring program at Paint Branch Elementary, shown students the importance of reading by being part of the reading program at Early Childhood Academy and he's been heavily involved in running a skills clinic at the Upper Marlboro Boys & Girls Club.

On the field, Likely has been named First Team All-Big Ten as a defensive back each of the last two seasons. Also a dynamic returner, the Belle Glade, Florida native was an All-American return specialist in 2015 after leading the country with 1,197 kick return yards.

Adding to a growing list of preseason accolades, Likely was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List and the Nagurski Trophy Watch List last week, and earned recognition on the Thrope Award Watch List earlier this week.
